THE JOURNEY

In early 2019, Amy Rose and Cary left suburban life and moved to their newly purchased 2.5 acres in rural Clark County. Neither of them had even heard of Yacolt before, but the moment they stepped foot on the property, they both knew they were home. Shortly after moving in, they discovered that they were expecting their long-awaited first baby, marking the end of a trialing walk with infertility. This only cemented the knowledge that they belonged here. In December of 2019, their daughter, Lyndie, came into the world. Just as they were settling into life as a family of 3, March 2020 came along and the world shut down. This is when they realized that they had the opportunity to start creating something special. And so Fir Creek Farm was born.

Over the next couple years, they slowly grew their little farm from the ground up. 3 chickens turned into 9 chickens turned into 28 chickens. In 2021, their son, Remy, joined their family. After nearly a decade of following a strictly vegetarian diet, they decided to venture into the world of raising and processing their own meat. Their first batch of Cornish Cross broiler chickens was an experiment of will more than skill, but they came out feeling accomplished and proud of the food they’d produced for their family and friends, and wanted to share that with their local community. With chickens under their belts, they figured turkeys were a logical next step. And then why not add some pigs in! Seemingly overnight, they realized they had a full-fledged little farm on their hands.

Amidst all the chaos (oh yeah, they were also in the middle of a full gut-job remodel while building up their farm and welcoming their second baby), Amy Rose realized how much joy her birds and their beautifully unique eggs brought her. By this point they’d decided that everything they brought onto their farm needed to pay for itself, so she wondered how she could make a little extra money while also adding even more colors to her egg basket. Thus began her chicken breeding program. What started as a hobby (and maybe an excuse to have more chickens) turned into a way help support their family and budding farm.

Virtual Farm Tour

  • The Barn House

Our barn-shaped house was built in 1982 and has gone through many updates since. The most recent update began when we found extensive carpenter ant damage shortly after moving in. While it was more than we originally bargained for, we’ll come out with a house better suited to serve our family for many years to come.

  • The Egg Layers

While most of our hens lay eggs, we refer to our eating egg flock as our Egg Layers. It all started with our OG3: Lily Tomlin, our sweet little bantam hen who goes broody often and loves being a mama; Jane Fonda, our spunky Polish crested who thinks she runs the world, and our big girl Algiz who actually does run the show. Our flock is ever growing as we find more beautiful chickens that we just can’t seem to live without.

  • The Breeding Groups

Our breeding program is Amy Rose’s pride and joy. We have purebred Black Copper Marans, Welsummers, and Whiting True Blues. We also strategically mix those breeds to produce an amazing variety of Traditional Olive Eggers, Speckled Olive Eggers, Spearmint Eggers and Easter Eggers. We never knew the joy that a simple egg could bring us and we’re so excited to be able to share that with you.

  • Pastured Poultry

We raise our broiler chickens in small batches and give them the best life we can until processing day arrives. They spend the first few weeks of their life under heat while their feathers come in and then they move out onto pasture in a secure, portable chicken tractor. We move them daily onto fresh grass and process them all on site with the quickest, most humane methods available.

  • Forest Pastured Pork

Curly, Casper and ‘mokey are our 3 Mangalitsa/Red Wattle mixes who came from our wonderful friends at Thiselle Creek Farm. We’re putting them to work tilling up the sad parts of our farm to help us create more usable pasture space. Every one to two weeks we move their 9000sqft of electric netting to a new part of the property to give them fresh ground to destroy. When their work is done and they’ve reached market weight, they’ll feed our family.

  • Heritage Turkeys

We have a resident flock of 3 beautiful Bourbon Red Turkeys. These beautiful birds get moved onto fresh ground as needed to keep them happy. They provide lots of entertainment for the kiddos and adults alike when they gobble in response to our cue.
